A native of New York City, I received my A.B. in studio art from Adelphi University and my M.A. in art history from Case Western Reserve University, where my research focused on the New Deal federal art patronage programs. I also studied sculpture at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, where I held a Max Beckmann Memorial Scholarship, and at Hornsey College of Art in London.<\/p>\n<p>In 1990, after serving as curator of the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, NY, director of the Public Art Preservation Committee in Manhattan, and curator of Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, I became the director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, a National Historic Landmark museum and research collection in East Hampton that is administered by the Stony Brook Foundation. I retired from that position in January 2024. I have also been a guest curator at the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing, NY, and have taught at the School of Visual Arts and in Stony Brook University\u2019s Department of Art, Art History and Art Criticism. I\u2019ve lectured widely on modern American art, and for five years my visual art commentaries, \u201cArt Waves,\u201d were heard on WLIU 88.3 FM, Long Island\u2019s NPR affiliate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21\" title=\"Helen in Taos\" src=\"https:\/\/helenharrison.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/taos-107.jpg\" alt=\"Helen in Taos\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helenharrison.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/taos-107.jpg 224w, https:\/\/helenharrison.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/taos-107-49x80.jpg 49w, https:\/\/helenharrison.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/taos-107-75x121.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/>From 1978-2006, I wrote art reviews and feature articles for the Long Island section of <em>The New York Times.<\/em> My &#8220;Eye on Art&#8221; column appeared monthly in the <em>Sag Harbor Express<\/em> from 2010-2020. My articles, essays and reviews have appeared in many publications, including the <em>Journal of American Studies, Prospects, American Art, Provincetown Arts, Wintertur Portfolio<\/em> and the <em>Archives of American Art Journal.<\/em> I\u2019ve also written many exhibition catalogues and contributed to several multi-author publications, including <em>Jackson Pollock: A Centennial Retrospective<\/em> (Yamiuri Shimbun, 2011) <em>Ary Stillman: From Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism<\/em> (Merrell, 2008), <em>Abstract Expressionism: The International Context<\/em> (Rutgers University Press, 2007), <em>Elaine de Kooning<\/em> (Georgia Museum of Art, 1992) and <em>Remembering the Future: The New York World\u2019s Fair from 1939 to 1964<\/em> (Rizzoli, 1989). You\u2019ll find snapshots of my books and catalogues on the <a href=\"https:\/\/helenharrison.net\/?page_id=6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Publications page<\/a>. I&#8217;m also the author of five mystery novels set in the art world.
